Water is colorless, odorless and tasteless, but we can transform it to make it more attractive, so that daily hydration can be healthy but also varied in flavors.
Homemade flavored water can be prepared through a cold infusion process. You can put the fruits or vegetables you like in cold water and let it rest for a few hours. After this time, the water will have the flavor and aroma of the fruit or vegetable, giving you a healthy and flavorful source of hydration.
Flavored water can be easily made at home. The important thing is to know the combinations that fit best, such as mango with some citrus (orange, lemon, tangerine, lime, grapefruit), or ginger and red fruits, which are a good base for any flavored water.
Here are some recipes to prepare a liter and a half of flavored water. You just must put the following washed ingredients in the water and let them rest for at least 4 hours:
Mango, lime, and basil. In a jug or bottle, add the water, the skin of half a mango, half a lime in thin slices and a sprig of basil to give freshness to the infusion.
Cucumber, lemon, and lavender. Cut the skin of a cucumber into strips and add them to the water with a few thick slices of cucumber. Add half a lemon in thin slices and a teaspoon of dried lavender flowers.
Pineapple and ginger. Put three thin slices of pineapple and a larger amount of pineapple peel, along with a few strips of ginger. The smell and taste of this flavored water is irresistible.
Berries. You can mix different berries or use them separately. The ones that best aromatize the water are strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries. When you serve the berries flavored water you can add a few drops of lemon juice, which will enhance the flavor.
Watermelon, melon, and mint. This is one of the most refreshing recipes for summer and is prepared by adding to the water slices of watermelon and melon (with part of the rind) and some mint leaves.
Chamomile, cherries, and lemon. Cut the cherries in half and remove the pit. Add two thin slices of lemon and a little chamomile, the same one used to prepare hot infusions.
Kiwi, apple, and coconut. Chop a kiwi, two medium apples and add them to the water. Then add a little grated coconut. Coconut is very aromatic, so it is important not to add too much to prevent it from overriding the flavor of the other fruits.
Carrot, cucumber, coriander, and cardamom. Cut the cucumber and carrot into strips with a potato peeler and add a few sprigs of coriander. Then, crush a couple of cardamom pods and add it to the mix.
How much water should we drink a day?
Hydration is necessary to maintain the body's functions; in fact, water accounts for 60% of the weight in men and 55% in women, which can be about 42 Kg in a person weighing approximately 70 Kg.
To be hydrated, it is necessary to drink between 2 and 2.5 liters of water a day, but this amount varies according to weather conditions, at higher atmospheric temperatures you must drink more liquid.
Flavored water not only helps you stay hydrated but is also an important source of vitamins and minerals from the fruits and vegetables used to prepare it. So don't hesitate, if water is too bland for you, flavor it in a healthy way!
