Self-confidence is defined as a feeling of trust in one's abilities, qualities, and judgement. Building strong self-confidence is important for coping with different life events and helps us feel good about life, ourselves, and others.
However, at some point in life we can lose self-confidence. If it is occasionally, nothing happens; but when it becomes a long-term problem, it can have a negative effect on our physical and mental health, increasing the risk of developing conditions such as anxiety or depression.
For building a strong self-confidence you must work on it every day, check the progress you are making, analyze the mistakes and identify the areas in which you can improve.
Here are some tips to achieve it:
Identify your achievements and write them down. Keep a list of the things that you are achieving in life, learning a new language, playing tennis, or eating healthier. It should not be a closed list; you can add new goals and achievements at any time. One piece of advice: set realistic goals that you can achieve in your day-to-day life. If at any time you have doubts about your abilities, read your list of achievements and you will see what you are capable of.
Discover your strengths and talents. Everybody is good at something. Find out what your strengths are and enhance them. Work on the skills you have and learn new things. This process is very rewarding and will help you develop confidence in your own abilities.
Set new goals. Think of something you like or something you want to do and plan how to achieve it. It should not be something out of your reach, but possible and realistic goals, such as learning to cook with your children or planning a trip to the mountains. Each goal you achieve will help you to have more self-confidence and to overcome complicated life scenarios.
Eliminate negative self-talk. Negative thoughts about yourself and your skills are an obstacle to achieving your goals. Always think positive!
Find a hobby that is fun for you and helps you develop your skills. If you do activities that really interest you, you will have the necessary motivation to continue with them and see positive results.
Take care of positive relationships. Build friendships that help you be a better person and run away from negative people who are unable to see the positive side of life. Share your enthusiasm and joy with the people around you and you’ll see how they respond to you with the same positivity.
Learn to say no. You don't always have to do what others expect you to do. If you realise that you can’t do something, that it is not good for you or you simply don’t feel comfortable doing it, say no clearly, without getting upset and explaining why you cannot do it.
