When it comes to mental health, many people think that it only has to do with people who have a serious mental illness. But mental health is everyone’s business.
Having good mental health or emotional well-being helps us to face life with strength and resilience. Furthermore, when we feel good emotionally, we can give the best of ourselves, both in family life but also at work.
It is important to take care of mental health every day because the emotional health is not something permanent or invariable. Mental health fluctuates depending on the circumstances and the problems we face. Follow these recommendations to keep it 100% at all stages of your life:
1. Talk to someone you trust
Sharing your feelings and concerns with someone you trust will help you reduce anxiety and objectively assess the situation you find yourself in. Sharing your problems can also help you to solve them. And remember that talking about your feelings is not a sign of weakness. Express yourself!
2. Get regular exercise
When we exercise, our body produces endorphins, which are hormones that increase the feeling of well-being. Exercise also improves confidence, self-esteem, concentration, and rest. To obtain these benefits, it is not necessary to exercise at a high intensity or for many hours. A daily walk of 30 minutes is enough to feel much better.
3. Eat well
What we eat has an impact on our physical and mental health. To feel good, it is important that you follow a diverse and balanced diet, high in fruits and vegetables, and low in fat, salt, and sugar. Consume red meat in moderation, choose fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids and stay hydrated throughout the day.
4. Avoid alcohol
Some people drink alcohol to improve their emotional health. What they get is the opposite. When the effect of alcohol wears off, physical and mental discomfort appears. To this, we must add that frequent alcohol consumption increases the risk of developing many diseases, some of them very serious. Alcohol is not a solution to emotional problems. If you use alcohol to improve your emotional health, seek help from your friends, family and medical services.
5. Take a break
To maintain good mental health, it is important to take breaks throughout the day to disconnect and de-stress. These breaks can be a few minutes of meditation, breathing exercises, yoga, a walk, stretching...
6. Get good sleep
Sleeping well is essential to feel good physically and psychologically.
- The recommended amount of sleep for a healthy adult is at least seven hours, although some people may need more or fewer hours to feel rested.
- Go to bed and get up at the same time every day, and if you don't fall asleep within about 20-30 minutes, leave your bed and do something relaxing outside the bedroom.
- Avoid heavy meals within a couple of hours of bedtime.
- Avoid the consumption of alcohol, caffeine, and tobacco, as they interfere with the quality of sleep.
7. Stay connected
Several studies have shown that social contact improves emotional well-being and mental health. Don't isolate yourself and always keep in touch with family and friends who give you positive energy and support.
8. Ask for help
Have you ever thought that you can't handle everything on your own? This is normal, although sometimes it is difficult to admit it. If you think that the situation you are in has a negative impact on your quality of life, on your physical and mental health, or on your family and work relationships, do not hesitate to ask for professional help. There are many tools and techniques that will help you deal with stress, anxiety, and emotional issues.
